Guitar is one of the most searched musical instruments in India. It is also one of the most poorly purchased — because the gap between a Rs. 2,000 beginner guitar and a Rs. 12,000 quality instrument is enormous, and most buyers cannot see it in a product photograph.
The Three Types of Guitar You Will Encounter
Classical (Nylon String): Softer strings, easier on fingertips, traditionally used for classical music training. Good for complete beginners and for students learning fingerstyle playing.
Acoustic (Steel String): Louder, brighter tone. The guitar of most popular Indian music — Bollywood strumming, folk music, campfire playing. More versatile for most students.
Electric: Requires an amplifier. Not the right starting instrument for most Indian students — adds cost and complexity before the basics are established.
Guitar Price Ranges in India 2026
- Under Rs. 3,000: Factory-made, often with uneven frets that make learning harder. The instrument works against the student. Avoid.
- Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 8,000: Quality starter territory. Brands like Yamaha, Cort, and Fender in this range offer instruments that play correctly and stay in tune.
- Rs. 8,000 to Rs. 20,000: Serious beginner to intermediate range. Better tonewoods, improved playability. For students who have committed to learning.
- Rs. 20,000+: Professional range. Not the right starting point for most students.
What to Check Before Buying
- Does the guitar stay in tune for at least 20 minutes of playing?
- Are the frets smooth at the edges? (Sharp fret ends make playing painful)
- Is the action (string height from fretboard) comfortable? Too high = very difficult to play
- Does it come with a basic setup from the manufacturer or dealer?
