Tabla Ka Sir Badalna: Kab Zaruri Hai, Kaise Hota Hai, Kitna Kharcha

Every tabla head (pudi) has a lifespan. How long it lasts depends on how hard you practice, how well you maintain it, and whether the original head was quality leather to begin with. This guide tells you how to know when it needs replacing and what the process involves.

Signs That Your Tabla Head Needs Replacement

  • The syahi is cracked or chipping: Small surface cracks are manageable with careful use. Deep cracks through the syahi affect tone permanently.
  • The leather is torn or has a hole: Even a pinhole causes the tabla to lose pressure and pitch control. Replacement is immediate.
  • The tone is flat and does not respond to tuning: If you tune the tabla to the correct pitch but the naad ring is gone, the leather is worn out. Tuning cannot restore a dead head.
  • The head is visibly uneven or warped: If the leather is no longer flat across the playing surface, the tabla cannot be tuned correctly.

What Head Replacement Involves

Replacing a tabla head (pudi) is a skilled job. The old leather and baddhi (straps) are removed. New leather is selected, cut, and fitted to the specific drum diameter. The syahi is re-applied by hand — this is the most skill-intensive part. The new head is then tensioned and tuned.

This work should be done by a karigar who has experience with syahi application. A poorly applied syahi on a new head will produce the same flat tone as the worn-out one it replaced.

Cost of Pudi Replacement in India 2026

  • Dayan head replacement (pudi + syahi): Rs. 800 to Rs. 2,500 depending on leather grade and karigar
  • Bayan head replacement: Rs. 400 to Rs. 1,200
  • Complete set (both heads): Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 4,000

In some cases, if the shell is old and the baddhi is also worn, it is more cost-effective to buy a new beginner tabla than to replace heads on an old one.
