Tabla Ki Sahi Dekhbhal: 8 Zaroori Tips Jo Har Owner Ko Pata Honi Chahiye

Most students damage their tabla in the first three months. Not through hard use. Through wrong storage.

They leave the tabla in a corner without a cover. Or they wipe the syahi with a damp cloth because it looked dusty. Twenty years of making handcrafted tabla sets in Khamanon, Punjab has shown us the damage this causes: cracked syahi, warped leather, a dayan that can no longer hold pitch.

1. Never Store the Tabla Without a Cover

The leather head of a tabla responds to the environment. A padded carry bag with foam lining keeps both drums safely separated. Padded tabla bags and ring sets are available here.

Takeaway: A Rs. 400 bag protects a Rs. 12,000 tabla.

2. Keep the Syahi Dry at All Times

Never wipe the syahi with a damp cloth. Never wash the tabla head. In monsoon season, store the tabla with a small silica gel packet inside the bag.

Takeaway: Dry only. Always. No exceptions.

3. Oil the Leather Straps Occasionally

Once every one to two months, apply a very small amount of mustard oil or coconut oil to the baddhi using your fingertips. Not the playing head — only the straps.

4. Tune Carefully — Never Force the Pitch Up Fast

Tune in small increments, checking pitch after each adjustment. Strike the gattha with a firm but measured blow. Go around the drum evenly. A good tabla tuning hammer makes a significant difference here.

5. Rest the Tabla on Its Rings

Both drums should sit in their rings during storage and practice. If your tabla came without rings, a complete tabla ring set is available here.

6. Keep Away from Direct Sunlight and Air Conditioning

The ideal storage location: indoors, away from direct sun, away from vents, at a stable room temperature.

7. Clean the Playing Surface Correctly

  • Wipe the bayan surface with a dry soft cloth after every practice.
  • Do not apply tabla powder to the dayan. Powder on the dayan interferes with the syahi tone.

8. Rest New Tabla Leather Before Heavy Practice

For the first two weeks: practice for 30 to 45 minutes at a time. After two to three weeks, the leather stabilises and holds pitch reliably.

Monthly Maintenance Checklist

  • After every practice: Dry-wipe bayan, gentle dry-wipe dayan, cover both drums, return to rings.
  • Every month: Apply mustard oil to the baddhi leather straps only.
  • Every monsoon season: Add a silica gel packet inside the tabla bag.
